Why Valve Blocks are Essential for Excavator Demolition Arms

When modifying a standard excavator into a demolition machine with a three-stage long-reach arm, adding a valve block is not an optional upgrade—it is a strict mechanical necessity. The fundamental reason for this requirement is that the original hydraulic system of a standard excavator simply lacks the required number of hydraulic circuits.
A standard excavator is designed with a limited number of hydraulic lines, typically sufficient for a two-stage arm and a standard bucket. However, a three-stage demolition arm significantly increases the complexity of the hydraulic system. It requires multiple additional hydraulic cylinders to control the extended sections, plus extra circuits for the front-end attachment, such as a hydraulic shear or crusher. In total, operating this setup requires at least five to six independent hydraulic circuits, which far exceeds the capacity of the original factory-installed lines.
To bridge this gap, mechanics must install additional valve blocks, such as double or triple valve blocks. These blocks act as hydraulic distribution centers, providing the extra pathways needed to supply pressurized oil to all the new cylinders and attachments. Without them, the extended arm and the front-end tool cannot function properly.
Furthermore, these added valve blocks often integrate critical safety and performance features. For instance, they can house explosion-proof valves (hydraulic locking valves) that instantly lock the hydraulic cylinders in place if a hose bursts, preventing the massive arm from suddenly dropping. They can also include regeneration valves, which recycle hydraulic fluid to improve the speed and smoothness of the arm's movements. Therefore, installing a valve block is a mandatory step to ensure the modified demolition arm has sufficient hydraulic power, operational control, and job-site safety.
